Direct answer. Run a job search while employed from a separate personal system: your own device, email, phone, calendar, storage, and tracker. Keep the weekly workload small enough to sustain, tell recruiters exactly when they may contact you, and treat LinkedIn's visibility controls as useful settings rather than a promise of secrecy.
This is practical organisation guidance, not legal advice. Employment terms and resignation rules vary by contract and country.
Most privacy mistakes here are boring: a calendar invitation on the wrong account, a recruiter calling a work number, or a CV saved to a company drive.
What Is the Ten-Minute Private Setup?
Before saving roles or editing your profile, make one clean boundary.
Which Devices and Accounts Should You Keep Separate?
Use this rule: if your employer owns, pays for, administers, backs up, or can remotely manage it, do not use it for your job search.
| Part of the search | Use | Keep off |
|---|---|---|
| Browsing and applications | Personal computer or phone | Work laptop, work browser profile, virtual desktop |
| Personal account | Work email or work aliases | |
| Calls and messages | Personal number and voicemail | Work phone, work chat, work meeting tools |
| Interviews | Personal calendar and meeting account | Shared work calendar, employer Zoom or Teams account |
| Documents | Personal storage with clear filenames | Work drive, work notes, employer-approved AI tools |
| Tracking | Personal spreadsheet or job tracker | CRM, ticket system, or task board owned by your employer |
The ICO's current monitoring guidance is written for organisations, not job seekers. It says workplace monitoring must be lawful and fair, while recognising that monitoring can capture private correspondence and information from personal devices used for work. Do not guess what a workplace can see. Keep the search outside workplace systems.

Can Your Employer See LinkedIn Open to Work?
LinkedIn gives you three choices: all members, recruiters only, or visible only to you. Recruiters only is not completely private.
LinkedIn's current Open to Work guidance says it takes steps to stop LinkedIn Recruiter users at your current company seeing shared career interests, but it cannot guarantee complete privacy. The protection also depends on the current employer marked on your profile.
Before switching it on:
- Check that your current employer is correctly marked as your present workplace.
- Choose "Recruiters only" rather than "All LinkedIn Members" if discretion matters.
- Review the job titles, locations, start date, and employment types you are sharing.
- Check your public profile in a signed-out browser.
- Review whether profile edits are being shared with your network.
LinkedIn also explains that public-profile settings control what signed-out visitors and search engines may see. Search engines may take weeks or months to reflect a change.
Open to Work is optional. Choose the setting that fits your risk tolerance, then act as though someone could still notice.
What Is a Sustainable Weekly Plan While Working Full Time?
The right schedule is one you can repeat without borrowing from work hours, sleep, or interview preparation. There is no universal application quota.
For example:
| Block | Focus | Finish line |
|---|---|---|
| One short weekday block | Review alerts and shortlist | Keep only roles worth a closer look |
| One focused weekday block | Tailor and apply | Submit one careful application |
| One weekend block | Network, prepare, and update | Send one useful message, prepare one example, update every live role |
Move the blocks to fit shifts, caring responsibilities, health, and energy. If a live interview arrives, preparation outranks adding another application.
When the tailoring block is short, check the CV against the advert first. ApplyArc's free ATS resume checker needs no signup.
Use the job search routine planner when you need a 45-, 90-, or 180-minute plan. The important boundary is a finish line. Close the search when the planned work is done.

Open the free trackerHow Do You Network Without Announcing the Search?
Start with people who already have context: former colleagues, trusted peers, professional communities, and recruiters who cover your role family.
Ask for information before asking for access:
I am exploring roles in [field] and keeping the search private for now. You know this work well. Could I ask you two questions about [specific team, skill, or market]? Please do not share the conversation.
No message can force confidentiality. Share only what the recipient needs to answer the question. Avoid a broad public post, a burst of new connections from one target company, or generic messages sent to dozens of people.

What Boundaries Should You Set With Recruiters?
State the boundary in the first useful conversation. Do not make the recruiter infer it.
I am currently employed and this search is confidential. Please use this personal email and phone number. Do not contact my current employer or work address. Please ask before submitting my CV to any employer, and tell me the company and role first.
Also agree:
- safe call times and contact channels
- whether your CV may be shared, and with whom
- when references may be requested
- how salary, notice, location, and work pattern will be recorded
If an agency recruiter will not name the employer or respect those boundaries, stop the process.
How Can You Schedule Interviews Discreetly?
Offer interview windows outside your normal working time where possible. The right options depend on your job and contract.
For each interview:
- Put the real details only in your personal calendar.
- Block work-calendar time only as your normal policy requires. Keep interview names and links on your personal calendar.
- Join from a personal device and personal meeting account.
- Find a private location with reliable audio before the day.
- Leave a buffer so a delayed interview does not collide with work.
- Ask for the format, expected length, attendees, and time zone in advance.
Follow your employer's normal process for personal time, leave, and availability.
How Should You Handle References?
Tell the recruiter early that your current employer does not know. Offer a former manager, colleague, client, or academic contact where the employer accepts alternatives.
In England, Scotland and Wales, Acas says a recruiting employer should have made a conditional offer and obtained the applicant's permission before approaching the current employer for a reference. Acas also notes that employers do not always have to provide a reference and may limit who can give one.
Ask these questions before sharing details:
- Which references are required?
- At what stage will you contact them?
- Will you ask permission before each request?
- Is the current employer essential, or can it wait until after acceptance?
- What information will you ask the referee to confirm?
Acas covers England, Scotland and Wales. Northern Ireland has its own body, the Labour Relations Agency. Neither is a rule for every employer, so confirm the process with the hiring organisation.
When Should You Resign After a Job Offer?
No sequence removes every risk. A careful one runs:
- Ask for the offer in writing.
- Check the role, pay, location, hours, start date, probation, benefits, and any conditions.
- Confirm which checks and references remain outstanding.
- Ask what happens if a condition is not met.
- Check your current contract, notice period, leave position, and any restrictive terms.
- Reconcile the proposed start date with your notice period, and agree any change in writing before accepting.
- Accept through the requested channel and keep a copy.
- Decide when to resign based on the offer's conditions, your contract, your jurisdiction, and your risk tolerance.
- Resign through the required process and keep a written record.
Acas recommends putting job offers in writing to avoid misunderstandings and distinguishing clearly between conditional and unconditional offers. Its resignation guidance says to check the contract and workplace process, and notes that a written record can help avoid disputes about notice.
This is the point to get qualified advice if the offer, visa, notice, restrictive covenant, bonus, redundancy, or contract position is complicated. Do not treat a general article as advice on your legal position.
What Should You Not Do?
- Do not search, apply, interview, or store documents on a work device.
- Do not use work time, work email, work chat, or a work-paid AI account for the search.
- Do not assume recruiter-only LinkedIn visibility is secret.
- Do not post a public "new opportunity" message if confidentiality matters.
- Do not let a recruiter send your CV without naming the employer and getting your agreement.
- Do not give a current-employer reference without agreeing when it may be contacted.
- Do not copy confidential files, customer data, source code, contact lists, or work samples from your employer.
- Do not misrepresent an appointment, sickness, or leave.
- Do not breach your contract or workplace policies.
- Do not resign from a verbal summary without understanding the written terms and remaining conditions.
- Do not run the search every night until there is no energy left for the interviews it creates.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is it wrong to look for a job while employed?
Looking for another role is a normal career decision. Keep the activity on personal time and systems, follow your contract and workplace policies, and continue doing your current job properly.
Is LinkedIn Open to Work private from my employer?
Not completely. LinkedIn says it takes steps to hide recruiter-only career interests from LinkedIn Recruiter users at your current company, but it cannot guarantee complete privacy.
Should I tell a recruiter that my search is confidential?
Yes. Set written boundaries for contact, CV sharing, employer submissions, and references. Require your agreement before the recruiter sends your details.
Can a new employer contact my current employer for a reference?
Processes vary. In England, Scotland and Wales, Acas says recruiters should have a conditional offer and your permission first. Northern Ireland has its own body, the Labour Relations Agency. Confirm the actual process.
Should I resign as soon as I receive an offer?
First understand the written terms, remaining conditions, start date, and notice obligations. Timing depends on your contract, jurisdiction, and risk tolerance.
How do I avoid burning out while job searching and working full time?
Use a small number of scheduled blocks with a finish line. Prioritise live interviews over new applications, keep one tracker, and stop when tired work starts creating errors.
